Podiatry

What is Podiatry?

Podiatry generally describes a more in-depth assessment and treatment of the lower limbs and feet. The Podiatrist will assess, diagnose and treat the condition whenever possible.

The patient may have had an injury or in a lot of cases has just started with pain in an area for which there was no known cause. On some occasions the patient may need to be referred to an Orthopaedic Consultant specialising in feet for further assessment and treatment.

What conditions does a Podiatrist Treat?

Sports Injuries
A large proportion of what we treat at Harrogate Podiatry are sports injuries. The Podiatrist at Harrogate Podiatry has a variety of assessment tools at his disposal including treadmill and computerised gait analysis machine, which help with an accurate and speedy diagnosis. He also works very closely with the onsite Physiotherapists and Sports Massage Therapists to ensure the patient returns to full activity levels in the shortest possible time.
Heel Pain
There are many causes of heel pain for example Stress Reactions, Bursitis, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome and Achilles Tendinitis. The Podiatrist will be able to diagnose the condition and then advise on the appropriate course of treatment.
Plantar Fasciitis
One of the most common causes of heel pain is Plantar Fasciitis. The Fascia is a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to underneath the front part of the foot. In some cases this tissue can become over-stretched, leading to pain under the heel and sometimes into the arch of the foot. Lowered arches or flat feet are a main cause and also the wearing of flat, unsupportive shoes.

Symptoms are generally worse first thing in the morning, when standing in one position for long periods or when you start to walk after being seated for a while. Pain can ease slightly once you start to walk again.

Treatment: In a lot of cases footwear advice is all that is necessary, but sometimes a supportive insole placed in the shoe may be necessary. Referral to the Physiotherapist may be required in severe cases.
Metatarsalgia
This terms describes any pain under the ball of the foot and can have many causes. Examples are reduced fat pads, joint inflammation and nerve compressions. Treatment: Depending on the cause, supportive and cushioned insoles may be needed but again, footwear advice may be all that is necessary. The Podiatrist will recommend the best course of action.
Flate Feet / Fallen Arches
Many of us have flat feet without even realising. It is a very common condition that doesn’t always need any treatment. Sometimes it can be inherited or be due to lax ligaments or muscular problems. Treatment: The podiatrist will carry out a full biomechanical assessment and may advise corrective insoles, exercises and give footwear advice.

How does a Podiatrist correct my foot position?

Sometimes the foot needs to be supported and controlled. Orthoses are specially made inserts that are placed in your shoes to help treat many different foot conditions. They work by reducing stresses and loads on joints, muscles and tendons. In the Harrogate Podiatry clinic they can be produced on the day of your appointment to enable you to begin your recovery immediately.

Your podiatrist at Harrogate Podiatry is registered with The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
